End of Module Evaluation...

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I feel more than anything my confidence has grown throughout this module. And throughout the first year i have used the module as a platform and have explored all different types of media and techniques from video to screen printing on a whole i feel like my whole practice is coming together just in time for second year by deliberately dragging myself out of my comfort zone and trying new things i believe i have grown as a designer and am now at the stage where i'm bringing what i'v learned and my style together. one skill i have acquired is video and moving image i have learned how effective this can be as a tool for communicating your message in a variety levels. I now feel confident in applying this in the future. I have also learned to streamline my ideas and always get the message across first the rest tends to slot into place after that. I have also gained a greater understanding about grid this in turn has given me a greater understanding of layout and how information can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. I  now have a good understanding of screen printing and all the processes this involves this has given me an appreciation of time management in turn.

What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have found Primary research the most effective there is nothing better than contact i feel you get a real response and a more personal touch. Identifying the appropriate people is one thing but finding them and talking to them massively improves your understanding. Also very important is experience going out and experiencing your topic is to truly understand. Knowing someone is better than reading about them i find. A great research technique is to use all your senses to smell touch etc I feel this exploration has best informed my design development.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think my main strength is my style i have worked hard to develop this and will carry this onto the second year. As well as this my ideas and range of products. I think another strength i have is my ability to take one idea and get to the solution with speed i feel this will put me in good stead for the second year and into my third.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
My massive weakness is research i don't give enough time to this and an product is only as good as the research behind it . I have a habit of taking an idea and getting to involved in the process this can cause me to lose sight of its purpose i get carried away and need to take a stop back and reflect on occasion. I need more patience and give more time to the bits around the edges as they are the foundations of any work so i need to find an appreciation for them.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1. Give a lot more time to research.
2. Record my thought processes on paper, blog and photography.
3. Keep things simple i feel i have a habit of overcomplicating things.
4. Keep learning from my mistakes.
5. Develop more mock ups and generally improve crafting.

How would you grade yourself in the following areas?
(5 = excellent, 1 = poor)

Attendance 4
Punctuality 4
Motivation 5
Commitment 5
Quantity of work produced 5
Quality of work produced 4
Contribution to the group 5

Otley Posters...

Having seen many student bedrooms i have learned that posters are very popular and something students use a lot ,i know myself i love a free poster. So using the range of visuals i have accumulated i have made a range of posters i believe these will come in the pack, im not sure which i prefer but i way provide a range? Each poster has a deliberate and similar format they all follow the same colour scheme each can be associated with shape and of course image.

Otley Bags...

Continuing my cmyk theme i will present my bags in the same manner i did my t-shirts. I will have a 4 separate colours. So if you receive a yellow t-shirt you get a yellow bag with it. I will print these visuals onto linen bags this could act as a separate product or act as a piece of packaging by boxing out the bag and sealing the top?

Colour Experimentation...

For my bag i have taken a more typographical approach to otley. I have made a elephant profile using hand rendered typography. All the names of the pubs and bars make up the elephants face. I have taken this idea forward and took it further by creating various colour variations.

Ideas for packaging

Otley Games...

Otley Games-Laniards

Another product i would like to develop is a series of drinking games that students can get involved with whilst undertaking the otley run. This however needs to be undertaken whilst in the pub therefor the product has to be something easy to carry and assessable.

My idea is to have drinking cards that are attached to a lanyard these will come as part of the pack. And have rules and instructions to each game attached to the back

Beermats

I have given a lot of thought as to what students would use and have developed a range of beermats following the cmyk theme. I have been careful not to stray away from the underlining theme and feel that beermats would be entirely appropriate for personal use and promotional within the pubs. When designing the beermats i have referenced back to my previous experimentations with circles. I have also developed a typographical approach to illustrating otley within the profile of the elephant is all the appropriate bars.I may use this at a later date.

More ideas

Otley Instructions

To help the pub crawlers make full sense of this product and process i would like to include within my packaging an instruction manual to show the step by step process of receiving your t-shirt and what happens next                                                            I have been careful in the making of the instruction manual to tone down the colour so it does not take away from the main products. I have maintained the circle theme and have also given the instructions a dual function by using the underside as a practice run so the receiver can have a go before they apply pen to there shirt.

Pint = Stamp!!!!!!

So the crawlers have found their way to the pub. Instead of just having a tick box i have decided a more interesting and legitimate way of recording the individuals progress along the run is for each pub to be represented by a stamp. So anyone with an otley t-shirt who buys a pint receives a stamp to prove they bought a pint in the pub. This will provide more incentive to complete the run and ensure the pubs sell pints and have an active involvement.
