Thomas Edison...

Thomas Edison is most famous inventing the 1st working light bulb and direct current. His most iconic invention however is the lightbulb and this posses the most visual potential, so with this simple shape I have planned a very simple animation to see how this works out.

To help visualise my thinking I have prepared a short and sweet storyboard.

So I drew what was needed a light bulb and a couple of wires to power it.

I have taken the above and compiled them as basic layers (extending the wires) with a background to see how it will all appear on screen.

The animation in short is the wires leading to the lightbulb, and the lightbulb lighting up.

I will create the illusion of the lightbulb lighting up by making the layers for the animation within photoshop.

As well as the illustrations I will make a separate layer with a render.

I then applied the same render to the lightbulb (1) to make (2).

In brief the animation runs like this.

1. The bulb and wires come into focus.

2. Bulb is ready to light up.

3. Lightbulb lights to its full power.

Below is a small video to show this process.

Animating Freud...

I knew this animation would involve cogs but I wasn't sure exactly how this would come together so I did some storyboards.

After briefly exploring the Idea of cogs I decided to put this idea into practice. So I drew some cogs and put them and my previous drawing into photoshop.

I'm also including the Venusian man I figured he could roll onto the screen and start the cogs running.

Below I have mapped out in photoshop how I want my images to be positioned in the screen start and finish. The idea is the Venusian man rolls into the space in between the cogs to start the motion of the cogs. The top of the head disappears to reveal the cogs.

1. The Venusian man moves across the screen rotating.

2. Venusian scales down and rotates.

3. Venusian becomes a cog rotating in the centre of Freud's head.

3. Top of the head starts to disappear to reveal the cogs underneath.

4. Cogs are in full view and moving in unison.

Da Vinci

I thought that the apple could then fall into the Venusian mans hand and roll off screen running somehow into another shot. Below is a drawing of the Venusian Man I chose this to represent Da Vinci because I believe it is one of his most Iconic works and it also possesses the most scope for animation, it circular shape means it can roll bounce etc.

To demonstrate this motion I have some story boards...

So Venusian Man was going to roll across the screen, I thought this might look a little bare so I might apply a little strobe writing from Da Vinci's journal. I then put the 2 together to create a still of how I imagine it to look on screen. I will take this file and transfer it to AE to see if it works in a little trial run.

Archimedes...

As well as animating the individual geniuses and there triumphs I wanted to start thinking up ways in which I could link them together after analysing the previous Newton animation I figured the apple could be a recurring theme and perhaps run from one screen to the other?

below are some storyboards to demonstrate this idea...

So I thought I might try this for my next genius Archimedes the master of geometry. I thought how could the apple link with the genius, I pondered on this a while and figured that Archimedes was a master of war machines and none more noticeable than the catapult so what if Newtons apple landed in the catapult and was thrown into the next screen.

From this I drew out a catapult into separate parts in order to animate in AE, I then applied the appropriate textures and effects within photoshop.

I wanted to keep the similar but relevant to Archimedes so a laid a grid over the top to associate with geomatic drawing. I then put the two together to make a still of how it might appear on screen.
Below is a experimental animation of how this might work. If I revisit this idea I might consider having the catapult roll into the shot and perhaps have some illustration of Archimedes, also I think I need to look more carefully at the motion of a catapult.

Newton...

I have decided to tackle my subject by selecting each genius drawing them or their creations. Then roughly layering them out in photo shop and importing these layers into After effects to see how they might move and what might look better when I make my actual advert. In a nut shell...

To best demonstrate my idea I made some story boards...

I applied my image to the correct document size in photoshop I then added a background, I have decided to go for a simple black an sand colour scheme.

I then thought how can I visually demonstrate newtons theory of Gravity. I decided that this could be as simple as the story behind him discovering it the apple could fall on his head.

I then went about animating this Idea within After Effects...

Sigmund Freud...

After playing around with the einstein Idea I moved onto another of my top 10 Freud. Freud was a psychologist and developed the theory of the unconscious mind. To visually demonstrate this feat I want Freud's mind to be working like a clock with lots of cogs and bolts.

This is a drawing I did of the great man...

After editing my drawing I had a little play with colour. From this I have found these pale neutral colours work the best I also feel they are in keep with the theme, especially the lighter brown they almost give the image an academic feel. I may apply a similar colour range to all my images and final animation.

Im not sure how the below will animate but this is something like how I would want it to look. With cogs almost operating the brain of Freud.

Making Einstein...

In order to make my video I used a cross section of mediums from the drawing to photoshop one thing I have found is that after effects is only as good as what you put in it even the most simple movements and keyframes can look effective depending on the quality and preparation of the layers imported.

The 2 images above and below were the starting point a quick drawing of Einstein and marks that make up his equation.
When edited these marks came together to form a black board of equations.
Below are a collection of images that formed the backdrop to my animation simple renders look good when applied to keyframes.

Einsteins Theory of Relativity- With music...

Applying what I had learned about audio I have applyed a rising piese of music to express the sence of achivement and the strugle Einstein endure to prove his theory.

The music I have chosen is Beethoven's Piano concerto No 5.

Below is both put together, footage and music.

Einsteins Theory of Relativity- After effects...

After story boarding my animation and compiling this in a pdf I decided to go about making a short clip on after effects. The video aims to introduce the genius and there achievement this could be theory invention etc. Visually communicating both within the time frame. More than anything I would like my video to express the triumph of his discovery.

Albert Einstein...

Open publication - Free publishing - More same

Above I have prepared a more detailed story board to help visualise my Idea. I will take this forward and prepare it within AE

Einstein- Storyboards...

I want to create an experimental I dent for Albert Einstein in short I want the genius to be presented his name and his discovery in a series of visuals but firstly I mapped this out on storyboards.
